It was 10:27 am on Tuesday the 2nd of May, 2003, and I was upstairs in my small study, sitting in front of my computer, facing the book shelves.
My heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty. I’d just decided to buy my first stocks ever. I was excited and scared at the same time when I logged into the trading portal. In trepidation, I carefully filled in all the details, meticulously checking and double-checking every letter and digit I typed.
Little did I know that these exact emotions – excitement and fear - would be responsible for some of my biggest mistakes later down the track.
Emotions are very powerful driving forces in our lives; and emotions like fear have been essential for the survival of mankind. Fear makes us focus on one thing only: how to get away quickly and how to run faster. Certainly advantageous when you stand in front of a bear or bull, but when it is a bear or bull market it doesn’t help at all, because it shuts down our thinking capacity.
I then discovered that I can control my emotions and that it is actually a very simple technique to learn. Thinking in retrospect, I used to see myself as an unwritten book, and since then I have studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). I like to define it as the things successful people do anyway, because that’s how these techniques have been discovered: by modelling successful people. Tools and strategies to set yourself up for success, as I have proven over and over again in my life as well as in the lives of the clients I have coached.
